Kartikeswar is the son of God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is popularly known as Kartik.

Legend has it that he appeared to defeat and kill the asura Surapadman, who had become invincible.

The puja and yatra signifies the victory of Kartikeswar over the asuras.
